Tips for Keeping your Heater and Air Conditioning Running Efficiently

This is why it’s important to make wise and informed decisions regarding heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Here are three steps you can take to make your system more efficient to add to your comfort and subtract from your energy bill.

Seal your heating and cooling ducts: Countless energy is wasted by forced air and heat being pumped into uninhabited areas of the house. Ducts that run through the attic, crawlspace, unheated basements and garages can be sealed duct sealant or metal-backed foil. After sealing the ducts in those spaces, wrap them in insulation to keep them from getting hot in the summer or cold in the winter.

Change your air filter regularly: You should be changing your filter at a minimum of once every three months during the high-use seasons. A dirty filter slows down air flow and causes your system to work harder, wasting energy. This will also prevent dust and dirt buildup that may lead to expensive maintenance.

Install a programmable thermostat:  If your schedule has you away from home at certain times of the day, a programmable thermostat is an ideal way to save energy and stay comfortable. Through proper use of pre-programmed temperature settings, a programmable thermostat can save you nearly $200 or more every year in energy costs.
