Our guess is that you may have never thought about that, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, if you are looking to save some money on your energy bills, you should try to optimize it as best you can. Even a few minutes adjusting your thermostat settings could save you hundreds of dollars over the course of a year.

Set the Temperature

Here at Alps, we recommend setting your thermostat at 68 for the heater and 78 for the air conditioning. Now, that may seem a little out of your comfort zone, but that’s ok. If you need a little more heat or a little more AC, you can always manually adjust it when you need it. However, by making the default setting a little warmer or cooler than you’d like, you will save money when you aren’t there to need it.

Set the Time

Most thermostats will let you set multiple temperatures for different times of the day. If you are away from your home for work for most of the day, set your thermostat to turn off after you leave and turn back on before you typically get home. This will make sure it’s comfortable when you are there and saving energy when you aren’t. Do the same at night so the heater turns off after you typically go to bed, but turns back on before you wake up in the morning. Instead of your heat or AC running 24 hours a day, you can easily cut it down to 8-10 hours if you time it correctly.

Turn it Off for Vacation

Turning your HVAC system off is one of the biggest opportunities we see people miss. If you are not going to be in your home for a week or two, turn your HVAC off! There’s no point in keeping your home comfortable if there is no one there to enjoy it. Now, you might have pets staying home, or plants that are fickle, and in those cases, we still suggest turning your HVAC system down, but not completely off. This is just in case there it becomes very hot or cold while you are away.

Adjusting your thermostat can take very little time when you think about the cost savings over time that you could be gaining. If you haven’t checked your settings recently, take a look at it and set it to be more energy efficient. Not only will you save some money on your energy bills, you will be helping the environment as well!
