Small Ways to Save Big on Your Energy Bills

Sometimes, change can seem overwhelming, especially when it comes to your home life. But, don’t fret; there are lots of little things you can do to get started on the road to bigger changes. If you make more green decisions early on (i.e. when purchasing new appliances), it can save money for years to come. Here are a few ways to save energy around your home.

Load Up Your Washer and Dryer

The most efficient way to run your washer and dryer is by only running full loads of laundry. Doing laundry outside of peak hours is another easy way to save energy. You may also want to think about how often your clothes need to be cleaned.  If your shirt was worn for less than a day, it may be clean enough to wear again, especially when going to the gym or when a less than clean outfit is necessary (i.e. gardening).

Check Your Water Heater

Do you know what temperature is your water heater set to?  If you don’t, you may want to check because it is most likely too high.  Turning down the heat on your water heater saves energy.  The cooler the water temperature, the less energy it takes to keep the water warm.

Stop Spam

Spam isn’t always contained to your inbox. If you often receive unsolicited mail or ads, you can usually go online to take your address off of unnecessary mailing lists. Not only will your mailbox be less of a mess, but you will be helping the environment by eliminating unnecessary waste.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Wouldn’t you like to be able to control the temperature in your house, even when you are not home? A programmable thermostat allows you to set the temperature where you want it exactly when you want it.  This means homeowners can set their preferred temperatures when they are home and save money when they aren’t.  If you are confused about the best option for your home, we want to help!

Insulate to Regulate

If your home is not properly insulated, all of the treated air that you are paying for is going to seep out through cracks or gaps, especially near windows or doors.  Taking the time to ensure that all thresholds are properly sealed can save you a lot of money.

Efficiency is Key

One of the best ways to save money long term is to invest in energy efficient appliances. Yes, it might cost you a little more upfront, but over the lifetime of the appliance, the savings will greatly outweigh the initial costs.

Get a Home Energy Audit

A home energy audit will let you know how efficient your home is at using energy and how you can improve.  It’s a simple step to take to learn what you are doing right and where there are opportunities for improvement.
