Changing the air filter in your HVAC unit is one of the most simple maintenance tasks you can do. You just pull the old one out and put the new one in. However, most people don’t do this, ever. They only do it when the HVAC guy comes out after the HVAC system has stopped working.

Not only is it one of the easiest things you can do, it is one of the most effective for helping keep your HVAC running in tip top shape. 9 out of 10 HVAC system failures are caused by dirt and dust.

While we do recommend a tune-up twice a year, changing your air filter on a monthly or every other month basis will keep it running smoothly in between. Clean systems restore capacity and lessen running time. This means less money spent on your energy bills.

In fact, a study by the EPA showed that a build-up of just .042 inches of dirt (translation: very small amount of dust) on a heating and cooling coil can result in a 21% decrease in efficiency.

Additionally, the American College of Allergists shows that 50% of all illnesses are either caused or aggravated by polluted air. That means that if the air in your home isn’t clean, it could be making you sick!

Lastly, one out of every six people that suffer from allergies does so because of a direct relationship to the fungi and bacteria in the duct system.

We’ve said it a thousand times before and we will say it a thousand more – change your air filter!
This will help keep your HVAC unit running in tip-top shape and can help reduce the amount of sickness in you and your family.
