Although it’s difficult to tell exactly without seeing the unit itself, here are a few reasons why your AC might be on, but no cold air is coming out.

Low Refrigerant

A low refrigerant charge or a low refrigerant level will cause an AC unit to blow air, but not cool it. Refrigerant is necessary for the AC unit to be able to take warm air from the outside and cool it to the necessary temperature. Without it, you will literally just be blowing hot air. A low refrigerant level could be caused by a leak in the refrigerant line. However, as AC units age, it might be necessary to recharge the system to get it cooling the way it should. Running an AC unit without a proper refrigerant charge can cause additional damage that will cost you more to repair.

Leaking Ducts

Another possible problem is leaking ducts, or poorly insulated ducts. If the ducts are leaking, you will most likely still feel cool air coming out, but it just might be less air than should be. However, if it’s leaking a lot, or it it’s really poorly insulated, that air might be warming up between when the air leaves the AC unit and when it actually enters your home through the vent. During the summer, attics can easily reach 100 plus degrees. If your ducts are poorly insulated or leaking, all of the air you are paying to cool is being warmed up as it passes through your attic, costing you money.

Old AC Unit

Let’s face it, your air conditioner might be old, and if it is, it might not be working the right way. It’s similar to a car, there are only so much usage an AC unit can take before it needs to be replaced. Additionally, old AC units aren’t as efficient as new ones. The cost of replacing your AC unit is often recouped quickly with the money you save on your monthly energy bill. You can also receive rebates for installing energy efficient equipment in your home. On top of all of this, a new AC unit will work better at keeping your home cool and comfortable during the hot summer months.
