That’s why it is so important to understand how to properly care for your compressor, before it makes a huge dent in your wallet.

What is an A/C Compressor?

An A/C compressor is basically the “heart” of your HVAC system. If it is not working properly, your air conditioner won’t be able to cool your home. Just as a heart pumps blood throughout the body, a compressor pumps “refrigerant”, a special fluid that absorbs heat from the air, throughout your A/C system.

What can damage my compressor?

With proper care, an A/C compressor can last as long as the HVAC unit itself, about 15 years. But, that requires regular maintenance and prevention from underlying issues, such as:

  • Lack of Lubrication from an oil leak or oil pump failure
  • Electrical issues stemming from imbalances in voltage power
  • Overheating from lack of condenser cooling or a rise in pressure over time

When is the best time to replace my compressor?

We always suggest scheduling regular maintenance appointments for your HVAC system, in order to prevent a costly replacement. Much like your heart, it is nearly impossible to repair heavy damage after too much time has passed.

Avoid an expensive replacement by scheduling maintenance of your HVAC system at the change of each season. This will put you ahead of any major problems, many of which can be repaired or remedied, before they become a major issue.
