portable air conditioning, efficiency, heat waveWith rising heat waves that are becoming more and more common even in the “winter”, most of us living in Southern California cannot get away with just using ceiling fans or portable fans to cool us down anymore. Temperatures are likely to rise before cooling off in the near future and an uncomfortably warm house or apartment is sure to make anyone a bit cranky.

If you do not have the luxury of an in-home air conditioning system, portable AC’s may be the way to go. They are an investment, since many of the topnotch devices are pricey. But with California consistently breaking heat records it might be time to look into purchasing one to sleep a little cooler at night.

Most portable air conditioners require little assembly and are designed to easily follow you from room to room cooling the environments you are spending the most time in.

An online evaluation report found a number of great portable air conditioning options that could be the right fit for you.

Half of the portable AC units that ranked in the top ten cost over $400, but the EdgeStar came in second place and costs only $269 (pretty affordable compared to most units!).

There is also the option of installing a wall air conditioner, which is a more permanent in-home cooling option. These units are sealed-in and placed outside of your home or apartment. They pull outside air into the AC unit, quickly cool it and then the unit blows the air back into your house.

Lastly, if you are just looking to cool down one specific area in your home you can invest in a window air conditioner, which acts like a wall unit but can still be seen as portable, since it can be placed in any room that has a window. This is a great alternative if you do not want to cut a hole in your wall to install a hanging wall air conditioner.

Keep in mind to research the energy efficiency of the unit you are looking to buy so as to keep your energy bills as low as possible while also minimizing your carbon footprint!
