**Summer in Southern California brings sun, fun, and…bugs.** When it heats up outside,
pests look for refuge inside. Although it may be tempting to just cross your fingers
and hope that they don’t choose your home as their summer hideout, ignoring pest
problems can have major consequences.

Many homeowners may not realize that an easy path into the heart of their home lies
in the HVAC system. It is important to protect your home from pests that can cause
structural damage or leave behind hazards that can negatively impact your health.
Luckily, there are simple solutions to protect your HVAC system and its components
from unwanted guests.

### **Duct, Duct…**

Cracks, holes, or gaps in your duct system are an easy entry point for pests. Insects
and, even mice, can squeeze through holes that are the size of a dime. In addition
to damaging equipment, any droppings left behind by pests can lead to serious indoor
air quality issues. If you discover any gaps or cracks in your ducts, we recommend
seeking out professional services immediately. Investing in routine pest control
services is a great way to prevent infestations. If you have had a recent pest infestation,
you should have your ducts professionally cleaned to improve the air quality in
your home.

### **Cover Your Vents**

Pests are not above entering your home through flue pipes and exterior vents, because
these cool, dark locations are ideal for building nests. Prevent pests from making
themselves at home by installing vent covers on all exterior flues, intakes and
exhaust pipes. Vent covers are also a great way to keep rain water out, keeping
your vents/flues dry will prevent future mold issues.

### **Show Your Condenser Some Love**

One of the best ways to protect your HVAC system is preventing pest access to the
air conditioning condenser. Insects and vermin can cause significant and expensive
damage to your exterior condenser by chewing or scratching the unit when they have
access to it. Show your condenser some love by regularly cleaning the surrounding
area and removing any debris. An easy way to wash is a mixture of mild soap and
warm water to scrub the exterior of the unit. If you have a few furry friends running
around, it may be beneficial to install pet repellants, which emit scents that deter.
Spray the repellant on the condenser and its surroundings to deter unwanted pests
from coming near your unit.
