At ALPS, we always remind our customers about the importance of regularly changing
their air filters. But, we have heard that many customers feel overwhelmed when
they are actually walking down the aisle of their local hardware store.

Flat, pleated, reusable? How are homeowners supposed to know which option to purchase
for their specific HVAC system?

We’ve come up with a few notes about the most common types of air filters and their
features to assist homeowners in making an informed purchasing decision:

### **Option #1: Basic Air Filters**

This first-level choice will keep your unit functioning. Basic air filters trap
large particles before they wreak havoc on your HVAC system. But, because it is
the cheapest option, it’s also unable to make a noticeable difference to air quality.
These types of filters need to be replaced monthly, so after a few changes, you
may want to upgrade to a longer lasting model.

Most basic models are easy to replace and can be found in home improvement and grocery
stores, but if you have allergies or dislike the idea of constant replacements,
you may want to move on to another option.

### **Option #2: Framed With Replaceable Pads**

This is the second-level choice when it comes to filters. The overall filter does
not need to be replaced, just the pads that capture grime, dirt and debris. This
upgraded filter is able to absorb smaller allergen particles from circulating through
your home.

But, because it absorbs more debris, it also needs to be replaced frequently, usually
every two months. If you don’t have the time to regularly change your filter, you
may want to move on to Option #3.

### **Option #3: Pleated Air Filters**

This is the luxury model of air filters. HVAC professionals tout these filters as
the most efficient. Many customers who don’t have time for regular maintenance choose
pleated air filters. They are durable and have slim replacement requirements. Allergy
sufferers will be happy to know that pleated filers are able to trap fine particles
and improve indoor air quality.

As an added bonus, this type of filter will only need to be replaced once a year!
The catch? Before purchasing, make sure to check with your Alps technician to determine
if you need to refit your duct work to accommodate for this filter’s wider design.
