hot days and high energy bills. But don’t lose your cool just yet.

Yes, your HVAC system usually accounts for almost half of your home’s energy costs,
there are things you can do to help it run more efficiently. Keep your home cool
and your wallet happy with these tips:

### **Change the Filter**

The easiest way to extend the life of your HVAC system and increase savings on your
utility bill is by changing your air filter regularly. In fact, [a dirty filter can cost you more money](https://alpscomfortair.com/importance-changing-air-filter/)
because your system requires more energy to push the air through. Typically, we
recommend that customers change their air filters at least quarterly, or monthly
during the warmer months. Check your filter for a build up of dust and dirt every
30-60 days, especially when you run your unit consistently.

### **Clean the Coils**

Located on your outdoor unit, the coils make your system run efficiently. A dirty
coil can limit how well your system heats or cools your home. Your outdoor unit’s
fan not only pulls warm air over the coils, it also collects dirt and debris when
not cleaned regularly. Coils that are free of dirt and debris can keep your system
running smoothly with less energy. Lastly, you can prevent a build up of dirt and
debris on the outdoor unit by trimming back plants, trees, and foliage.

### **Perform Regular Maintenance**

Not only does routine maintenance help your unit run efficiently throughout the
year, but it also extends the life of your system. At Alps, we recommend maintenance
twice a year – in the spring and fall- through our [tune-up special](https://alpscomfortair.com/promotions/).
Regular maintenance allows our technicians to assess your system for broken parts
that are prohibiting your unit from running efficiently.

### **Program the Thermostat**

One way to save money on future utility bills is by [installing a programmable thermostat in your home](https://alpscomfortair.com/4-benefits-installing-smart-thermostat-home/).
We recommend setting your temperature 10 to 15 degrees warmer in the summer and
cooler in the winter for at least 8 hours a day. This simple adjustment can save
you up to 15 percent annually on utility costs. The benefit of a having a programmable
is the flexibility of scheduling different temperature intervals while you’re at
home and away.
